Introduction
The Department of Obstetrics at Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital is a National Maternal and Infant Safety Excellence Service Unit, a core unit of the Guangdong Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecological Diseases, a Guangdong Prenatal Diagnosis Center, and a Shenzhen Specialty in Maternal and Perinatal Care. It is also designated as the Shenzhen Critical Maternal Rescue Center and serves as the Chair Unit of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Division of the Shenzhen Medical Association. As one of the hospital’s key clinical departments, it has developed into a modern diagnostic and treatment center focused on maternal and perinatal care, with a specialization in critical maternal rescue.
The department has a team of 22 physicians, including 3 chief physicians and 9 associate chief physicians, with over 80% holding master’s or doctoral degrees. The nursing team consists of 45 nurses, including 1 associate chief nurse and 29 senior nurses, all with bachelor’s degrees or higher. More than 30 staff members hold academic positions in national, provincial, and municipal medical associations. Since introducing the “Yang Huanming Academician Team”under Shenzhen’s “Three Renowned Programs” in 2016, the department has made significant progress in birth defect prevention and critical maternal rescue. It manages an annual outpatient volume of approximately 60,000 visits, 4,200 inpatient admissions, and 4,000 deliveries.
Specialty Features
The outpatient clinic includes subspecialties such as high-risk pregnancy, specialized consultations, prenatal diagnosis, twin and scarred uterus management, gestational diabetes and nutrition, pregnancy with autoimmune diseases, postpartum rehabilitation, and perinatal care. The ward covers an area of 3,500 square meters, with 57 planned beds and 98 open beds, and consists of two major units: the delivery room and the baby-friendly area.
The department performs all routine obstetric procedures available at tertiary hospitals, including but not limited to vaginal assisted deliveries (forceps, vacuum, breech extraction), abdominal aortic balloon occlusion for placenta previa and placenta accreta, external cephalic version for breech presentation, and surgeries for gynecological tumors during pregnancy. Other procedures include twin vaginal delivery, chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, and umbilical cord blood sampling. It consistently offers painless labor, natural childbirth, companion delivery, and prenatal education programs. The department is a leader in Shenzhen for advanced technologies such as ultrasound-guided fetal thoracic drainage and selective fetal reduction for multiple pregnancies. With the hospital’s comprehensive support, it excels in managing severe pregnancy complications and comorbidities, handling critical maternal cases for nearly two-thirds of Shenzhen’s population. Over the past decade, it has achieved zero maternal mortality.
